Project Accountant at CIHEB

The Center for International Health, Education, and Biosecurity Tanzania (Ciheb-Tz) is a local NGO that originated from the University of Maryland Baltimore’s (UMB) extensive 16-year presence in Tanzania. With a proven track record, Ciheb-Tanzania specializes in implementing Health Systems Strengthening and Health Programs, including initiatives focused on TB, TB/HIV, Quality Improvement, Laboratory Strengthening, Technical Assistance, Strategic Information, Disease Prevention, Surveillance, Outbreak Response, Data Analytics, and Data Quality Assessments. Originally affiliated with UMB, Ciheb-Tanzania now operates as an independent local organization.

Position: Project Accountant (2 Positions)

Reports To: Finance Manager
Location: Dar es Salaam

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Finance Manager, the Project Accountant will support the day-to-day operations of the Finance Department. Responsibilities include payment processing, record-keeping, and ensuring adherence to Ciheb-Tanzania’s financial policies and procedures.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Finance Manager in ensuring timely and accurate payments.
  • Prepare all payment transactions, ensuring proper coding and supporting documentation.
  • Verify the accuracy and completeness of payment documents in compliance with Ciheb-Tanzania policies.
  • Coordinate with field teams to issue and liquidate advances and review training-related documentation.
  • Oversee petty cash transactions, ensuring timely replenishment and maintaining cash count records.
  • Assist with monthly bank and account reconciliations.
  • Maintain proper filing and tagging of financial documents.
  • Stamp all paid invoices and documents before filing.
  • Prepare and submit tax returns on time.
  • Visit the bank for submissions and collections of financial documents as needed.
  • Handle photocopying and scanning of necessary financial instruments and records.
  • Perform any additional tasks assigned by the Finance Manager.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting and financial management.
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks Online or other ERP systems.
  • Experience working with international or donor-funded projects (e.g., USG-funded projects).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and independent work capabilities.
  • Fluency in English (speaking, reading, and writing).
